MLA CE Week 8

I looked at the Mashup of the Virginia Tech victims. The Mashup is entitled "Virginia Tech-In Memoriam", and it shows all of the pictures of the victims. A short biography of each person is included and what they did.
APIs: Google maps; Tags: Crime, Mapping. This Mashup was added the 28th of April, 2007.
It was sad to see the pictures and read about each person killed. The Mashup was very well done and well organized.

Regarding the Exercise about "Rollyo", it was hard to find articles dealing with privacy. The one article I read talks about anonymity and how some people get very upset when they read something but do not know who is writing the article. The person writing it thinks that librarians should embrace this so they can talk freely about things that they want to expose about librarianship in general. Using assumed names and not their real ones is critical and in some cases can save a person's life.
The article also states that free speech under a made up name is protected by the First Amendment.

Another writer talks about how some readers or critics make comments about what they read in a thoughtful way and make suggestions that make sense. Others, do not read the entire article, miss the message of what is being said and even make some insulting remarks without offering an alternative idea to what the writer is saying.

MLA CE Week 7

Working with YouTube was fun. I was able to view some of the videos taken when The Holy Father, The Pope was here in the United States.

Regarding Podcasting, I do see a lot of potential uses for Podcasting in ourlibrary. For example, some of the courses that we now teach to medical students can be done through Podcasting. Sometimes students cannot attend the courses that we are teaching as part of their orientation, so through Podcasting, these students can listen to the audio of what is being taught and not get behind.

I think Podcasting is an excellent way to communicate with others within your library. It is a good way to inform other departments within the library what projects you are involved in and how it contributes to the goals of your library and your institution.

MLA CE Week 6

I really had fun learning about Online Photo Sharing and Uploading. I first went to Facebook and learned how to add images to it. I added the images I wanted and limited the viewing of the pictures to friends only. Then, I went to my blog and added the same images to it.

I think Online Photo Sharing and Uploading would be an extremely useful tool in my library and for my work. We may be planning a new library, hopefully soon, and I think sharing photos of other libraries or floor plans with my colleagues would help the process tremendously.

Sharing online photos with the entire library staff would allow everyone to see pictures of events or activities that take place in the library for different reasons. I really like "flickr".

MLA CE Week 5

I really enjoyed working with Google Docs. This is a wonderful way to share documents with other colleagues, family and friends.

I am not sure that this is necessarily the future of all software products, but I certainly think it is an excellent tool. I will use it for my own documents.

MLA CE Week 4

I really enjoyed creating my own "delicious" account. I truly believe this tool could be extremely beneficial to everyone who is doing research.

I love the fact that I can get to my Bookmarks from any computer I may be using. Before I had the opportunity to use "delicious", I had to save a URL to my computer at work and then e-mail the address to myself so that I could save it to my computer at home. I love working with "delicious"!

Week 3: Social Newworking Tools

There are privacy concerns when joining a social networking site. If you don't want the wrong people to have access to your information, it is best not to post it.

MLA could benefit greatly by using social networking to communicate with its members. This would be a good tool to send information to members only without the public having access to it.

Since I am not a computer guru, it was very hard for me to use Facebook and be able to follow the exercises for week 3.
